Cornhole Scoring Rules: Cancellation Scoring Explained
Every cornhole game runs on the same simple math, but the moment two players both land bags in the same round the scoring gets subtle. Here is how cancellation scoring works, how to keep score correctly, and how to track it live during a real match.
Cornhole Quick Rules
First to 21 wins
Score bags, cancel your opponent, be the first team to 21. Here is everything you need to keep score correctly.
Know Your Bag Values
Each player throws 4 bags per round. The most one player can throw is 12 points (a four-bagger).
The Setup
- Two boards face each other, 27 ft (8.23 m) apart, front edge to front edge.
- Each board is 2 x 4 ft (61 x 122 cm) with a 6 in (15 cm) hole near the top.
- Two teams of 1 or 2 players. Each team gets 4 bags in their color.
- Throw from behind the front of your own board (the foul line). Alternate throws until all 8 bags are down. That is 1 round.
Who Gets the Points?
The team with more points scores the difference. The other team gets nothing.
Add up each team's bags
In the hole = 3, on the board = 1, on the ground = 0.
Points cancel out, one for one
Blue's 5 points wipe out 5 of Red's 7. Red has 2 points left over.
Only the leftover counts
Red adds 2 to the scoreboard and throws first next round.
7 vs 7? Everything cancels. Nobody scores and you just play the next round.
The team that scored throws first next round. After a tie, the same team keeps first throw.
Both teams count their bags, but only the winner of the round writes anything down.
Race to 21
First team to reach 21 points or more at the end of a round wins the game.
Always play out all 8 bags. Cancellation may swing the round before the last bag lands.

The three point values
Cornhole scoring uses three outcomes per bag:
- In the hole (3 points): the bag passes through the 6 in (15 cm) hole.
- On the board (1 point): the bag lands and stays anywhere on the 2 x 4 ft (61 x 122 cm) playing surface.
- Off the board (0 points): the bag misses, bounces off, or touches the ground first.
Each player throws 4 bags per round. That means the most one player can throw in a round is 12 points (a four-bagger).
How cancellation scoring works
Cancellation scoring is the official rule for the American Cornhole League (ACL), the American Cornhole Organization (ACO), and virtually every competitive league. It keeps games close and rewards consistency.
The rule is one sentence:
Points scored by opposing teams in the same round cancel each other out. Only the team with the higher round total scores, and only the difference.
Worked example (singles, 4 bags per player)
One round
- Red: 2 in the hole + 1 on the board + 1 miss = 7 points
- Blue: 1 in the hole + 2 on the board + 1 miss = 5 points
Blue's 5 points cancel 5 of Red's 7, so Red scores the 2 left over. Blue scores 0 for the round, even though they landed three bags.
If both teams end the round with the same total, the round is a wash. Nobody scores.
Playing to 21
The first team to reach 21 points or more at the end of a completed round wins the game. Always finish the round: cancellation can still swing the score before the last bag lands. There is no bust rule in standard casual play, so going over 21 in the final round is fine and the game ends.
Honors: who throws first?
The team that scored in the previous round throws first in the next round. This is called honors. When a round washes with no points scored, the team that had honors keeps them.
Common scoring mistakes
- Counting both teams' points. Only the round winner scores. This is the #1 mistake casual players make.
- Bags touching the ground. If a bag hits the ground before landing on the board it is dead, even if it ends up on the surface.
- Knocked bags. A bag knocked into the hole by a later throw still counts as 3. A bag knocked off the board loses its point.
- Foul lines. Stepping past the front of the board while releasing invalidates the throw.
Track cancellation scoring live
Doing round-by-round subtraction on your phone's calculator is fine, but the BAGGERS Real Opponent tool tracks in-the-hole, on-the-board, and cancellation math automatically as you tap in each round. It also keeps round history and honors so you can settle any dispute.

Frequently asked questions
What is cancellation scoring in cornhole?
Cancellation scoring means points scored by opposing teams in the same round cancel each other out. Only the higher-scoring team gets the net difference. It is the official American Cornhole League (ACL) and ACO rule and the standard in tournament play.
How many points is a bag in the hole vs on the board?
A bag that goes through the hole scores 3 points. A bag that lands and stays on the board scores 1 point. Bags on the ground score 0.
What score do you play to in cornhole?
Standard games are played to 21 points. The first team to reach 21 or more at the end of a round wins. Always play out every bag in the round before checking the final score.
Who throws first in the next round?
The team that scored in the previous round throws first in the next round (honors rule). If neither team scored, the previous first-thrower keeps the honor.
What is a 'four-bagger'?
A four-bagger is when a single player lands all four of their bags in the hole in one round, for 12 points before cancellation.
